As you stand before a crosswalk on a traffic-dense street in Madrid, you can hear the familiar anthem of cars hitting pavement, the wind rustling your hair as they whip past you. It’s a similar sight to roads in America, but with one heartwarming difference… the LGBTQ+ inclusive walk signs that were established across Madrid years ago.
Madrid is home to MADO (Madrid Pride), one of the largest LGBTQ+ events in Europe. The festivities take place each year during the first week of July, and the city boasts parties, concerts, sporting events, and even a large parade. But Madrid’s pride doesn’t end there: it celebrates all year, constantly challenging itself to be as inclusive to all members of society as possible, consistently making improvements to even the seemingly smallest of details.

By making these signs a permanent fixture in the city, Madrid made important steps in defying social norms, dismantling bias, and increasing LGBTQ+ visibility. Cities across the world can look to Madrid as a pillar of social progress, and perhaps can even be inspired to reimagine elements of their own traditional architecture.
