Tour of Venice

Near the midpoint of the program, a group of students decided to spend a Saturday on a trip to Venice, Italy. We had to get up early and be ready for a long day, but it was more than worth it. After the flight, a water-taxi service took us into Venice. When we got off the taxi and began to explore, it was immediately apparent why Venice is such an iconic and sought-after European destination.

Every step of the way, Venice feels authentic, with buildings showing their age and rich history. Though popular areas are often packed with tourists, if you go off the beaten path a bit, many of the city’s myriad of alleys are less crowded, offering a break from the rush. One of the highlights of the trip was seeing Saint Mark’s Basilica, a very famous cathedral built over 200 years ago.

Perhaps the most memorable part of the trip was a gondola ride. It’s an obvious activity, but something we had to see during our short time in the floating city. Going through the canals really makes you understand the beauty of Venice and look at it in a different way. Though a day trip from Barcelona, might sound inadvisable, the small size of Venice makes it manageable, and it keeps the trip a little more affordable. If you have a free Saturday, it’s a great option to consider.
