The City of a Thousand Fountains

The city of Aix-en-Provence, France is known for its thermal waters. At the beginning, when the town was just a Roman colony by the name of Aquea Sextie (meaning “The waters of Sextius”), the thermal waters of the town were well established. The Romans built many bath houses to use to their advantage. Over time, this spa town became known for its ailment-curing water, not just in its bath houses, but also in its many fountains as well.

In fact, Aix-en-Provence has the highest concentration of fountains in a single town, with over 250 fountains. As the city flourished, the number of fountains increased, each with its own story to tell and unique design. They are spread throughout the city, but you can find several along the main street, Cours Mirabeau, with many fountains being considered historical monuments.

When visiting the town, we were able to see many of these fountains while celebrating the Fête de la Musique, or festival of music. The Cours Mirabeau is one of the most well-known French streets and has some of the best examples of these magnificent fountains. Places you wouldn’t even expect it, though, can also house these amazing works of art. Random street corners, tiny parks, and shopping squares, all united by the numerous fountains scattered throughout the city.
