Soda-mazing: Spanish soda culture

Sodas lined up in a supermarket fridge.

Wandering through the streets of Barcelona, chances are you will see someone sitting outside a cafe enjoying a cold Coca-Cola, Fanta, or other soda. Soft drinks are extremely popular in Spain, and you are never far from a cold soda, as they are sold in restaurants, cafes, grocery stores, and mini markets all over Spanish cities. Many of the sodas consumed in Spain are vastly different from the ones we have in America. Spanish sodas tend to have more fruit flavors, with a variety of different Fanta flavors taking over the shelves. Fanta is extremely popular in Spain, with the original orange flavor and lemon flavor being some of the most consumed sodas.

There are also lots of options for sugar free sodas, with Coke Zero being one of the most widely offered beverages in the nation. Coca-Cola Light is another popular choice; it is similar to the Diet Coke that most Americans are used to. Flavors that aren’t offered in America include Diet Pepsi Lime, Peach Fanta, Vanilla Coke, Lemon Fanta, and many more. Much to our dismay, Dr. Pepper is not widely available in Spain. However, there are many other new and exciting soda flavors for Dr. Pepper fans to try. A day in Barcelona is not complete without an ice cold beverage!
