Sangria Cava – The Hot Hidden Menu Item

The streets of Barcelona are filled with restaurants, both world renowned and one-star worthy. But almost every menu shares one special, sometimes hidden, staple – Sangria Cava.

When most people think of a standard Sangria, they picture red wine infused with fresh fruit. Sangria Cava, however, is a special cocktail native to the Catalonia region of Spain. But what makes Sangria Cava different from a regular sangria?

Sangria Cava is a fruity combination of red wine, orange juice, cava, and fresh fruit, usually oranges. The champagne-like drink Cava is a local Spanish delicacy. It’s light, bubbly, sweet, and made right here on the Mediterranean Sea. The usual bitter taste of red wine is subdued and complemented by the sugary and tart orange flavor. This mixture is truly unique to the streets of Barcelona.

Each cocktail bar in Barcelona makes their Sangria Cava differently, thus creating a beautiful array of purples and pinks among the drinks. Restaurants only put Sangria Cava on their menu sometimes, to keep the gem away from tourists, but you can always ask the waiter to pour an extra splash of the delicious bubbly drink into a standard Sangria. Whether your Sangria Cava comes out dark or almost clear, this drink is a must try for the next time you visit Barcelona.
