El Born Centre de Cultura i Memòria is an archaeological site located in the heart of Barcelona. These ruins date back to the Roman Era and are free to be viewed by the public. This prominent area of Spanish history has had many different lives and our group was lucky enough to take in its intricate background.
We first learned about its predicted original use, which was as a preservation burial site for the city of Barcino, dating back to third century A.D. Experts have speculated about other possible uses, but one of the main turning points for the area was after The War of the Spanish Succession, when the grounds were turned into a citadel.
It seems that the most prominent use was after the citadel was built and the land was reclaimed for public use. In 1876, the Old Born Market opened and was used by the public as a fruit and vegetable market.
Now, the ruins that were found under the market sit in the center of that cast iron building that was originally used for the market nearly 150 years ago. Our group learned about the legacy of this area and dove deeper into a small pocket of the global history within Barcelona.
