Getting through Barcelona Gluten-Free

have Celiac disease, which requires me to stick to a gluten-free diet. It can be a very frustrating thing to deal with, especially when people in your own country don’t actually know what that entails. Imagine being in another country trying to communicate your allergy and popping that comfort bubble all over again.

As we’ve settled into Spanish life, I’ve had an often difficult time finding restaurants that offer a menu I can order off of. Things changed for the better when I discovered an app called “Atly,” which shows places around you that offer gluten-free and celiac friendly dishes. Since then, we’ve discovered a variety of great places to eat that fit my diet.

My favorite place where I have eaten is Messié pizza Gluten Free. Everything in the restaurant was without wheat, so you didn’t have to worry about cross contamination. The second location I love is Cafelunya, the cafe where we eat in the morning before class. This cafe is very understanding of my condition and even gives me an extra sandwich for free. I’ve also loved eating at a place called Honest Greens, where I enjoyed some baby broccoli and fruit flavored lemonade.

In Spain I think gluten-free people are accepted but not always thought about. Finding places that do put in the work to accommodate everyone has been great, and we hope to discover many more.
